How to Maintain Your Basketball Court Through a Canadian Winter
INTRODUCTION
Don't let a Canadian winter ruin your investment. From the right way to shovel snow to spring cleaning tips, learn how to keep your SurfaceSynx court performing at a professional level year-round.
One of the biggest advantages of SurfaceSynx modular tiles is how little work they require compared to traditional asphalt or concrete. However, a few simple habits will keep your court looking brand new for decadesβeven in the toughest Canadian climates.
Seasonal Cleaning
For most of the year, maintenance is as simple as using a leaf blower or a garden hose to remove debris. Because of our open-grid design, dirt and water wash right through the surface, preventing the "sludge" buildup common on solid courts.
Winter Snow Removal: Doβs and Donβts
You can play on your SurfaceSynx court all winter, but follow these rules to protect the tiles:
-
Use a Plastic Shovel: Never use metal-tipped shovels or snow blowers with metal augers, as these can scratch the UV-protective coating.
-
Skip the Rock Salt: Avoid heavy use of salt or corrosive de-icers. If you need traction, a light sprinkle of sand is safer and can be hosed off easily in the spring.
-
Let it Melt: If you have thin ice, it's best to let the sun do the work. The dark colors of many tiles naturally absorb heat and melt ice faster than grey concrete.
Dealing with Stains
If you get organic stains (like fallen berries or leaves left too long), a mild dish soap and a soft-bristle brush will usually do the trick. For a deeper clean, a pressure washer on a low-setting (under 1500 PSI) is safe to use.
